The First Earth Day Symbol or Ecology Sign is created by a combination of the letters “E” and “O” taken from the words “Environment” and “Organism”. Future flags used a theta because of its historic use as a warning symbol, or the peace symbol. The Greek Theta Symbol would later become associated with Earth Day.

The Ecology Flag was created by cartoonist Ron Cobb, and first published in October 25, 1969.

Earth Day Flag Meaning

The original Earth Day flag was designed using a combination of the letters e and o, from the words environment and organism. Furthermore, this flag originated from the Stars and Stripes on the US Flag. The color green replaced the blue and red of the American flag.
